While the field of 156 were hoping a Wednesday evening thunderstorm that poured half an inch of rain would have the demanding par-70 Oakmont Country Club showing its softer side, birdies were still at a premium.
World No 1 Tiger Woods, bidding for his third US Open title, was 1-under through six holes. The US superstar opened with a bogey at the par-four first, where he was in a fairway bunker off the tee.
He responded with a birdie at the second, finding the middle of the fairway and leaving himself an 18-footer. He added another birdie at the par-three sixth, which was playing at 198 yards yesterday.
