Town in the dark

An attempt to steal electric cables could be to blame for the fire at a substation in Kempton Park on Tuesday that caused damage estimated at about R30million, the Ekurhuleni municipality said yesterday.

General manager for electricity and energy Mark Wilson said the fire started at 2.30pm and was extinguished by 6pm.

"We suspect it was an attempted cable theft outside the substation," he said.

The entire Boksburg area north of Main Reef Road was still in the dark at noon yesterday.

Wilson said three other substations in the area fed by the Kempton Park one were offline as a result of the fire.

He said once power had been restored to those three, 80percent of power would be restored. - Sapa
