The Mpumalanga government will work with the Mbombela municipality to make the province proud by staging a successful 2010 Fifa Soccer World Cup.

Mbombela will host some games during the international soccer spectacle.

Premier Thabang Makwetla said coordination and strategic leadership support to the World Cup preparations remains one of the key priorities for this financial year.

Makwetla was speaking during his policy and budget speech in Nelspruit this week.

"We have no reason to doubt that we will succeed in working with Mbombela municipality to succeed in this event," said Makwetla.

He said the implementation of the 2010 Master Plan was under way, and there was political commitment and leadership resolve to fast- track the implementation of key projects identified as critical in hosting the World Cup.

He said: "To streamline all the preparatory work for the World Cup and ensure that there is coordination among the implementing institutions, an Integrated 2010 Office is being established to ensure that the work done by Mbombela, the office of the premier and the Department of Sports, Culture and Recreation is integrated and synergised,"

He said though the stadium was crucial to hosting arrangements, it was worth noting that the hosting agreement signed with Fifa has 24 projects, all of which are essential to staging a successful event.

"We will ensure that we accelerate the implementation of sector plans for which various departments and agencies are responsible," said Makwetla.
