A senior Limpopo government official is being investigated on allegations of assaulting a woman.
Rapule Matsane, the former spokesman for the provincial education department, allegedly manhandled the woman in full view of patrons during a drinking binge at the weekend.
Matsane currently works as a parliamentary officer for the department of education.
The woman, a senior nurse at Mapulaneng Hospital in Bushbuckridge, has opened a case of assault against Matsane.
Bushbuckridge police spokesman Captain Taylors Nkuna confirmed yesterday that a case had been opened against Matsane.
"It is true that we are investigating a case of assault against Rapule Matsane," Nkuna said yesterday.
According to an eyewitness, who did not want to be named, Matsane and the woman were drinking together at a liquor outlet in Bushbuckridge on Friday.
The woman, whose name is known to Sowetan, apparently asked Matsane to take her home in his car.
An argument started between the two and the woman swore at Matsane, who then became agitated and started assaulting her.
He allegedly pushed the woman against a wall and she sustained injuries to her eye.
The woman told Sowetan yesterday that she was still in pain.
"That man beat the hell out of me. I don't know what it is that I did to deserve that kind of a beating," she said.
She said she wanted the law to deal harshly with her attacker.
Approached for comment, Matsane said the woman had been bent on causing trouble for him.
"I helped the woman a lot in the past when she was attending psychiatric courses in Polokwane. She swore at me and assaulted me in full view of other patrons. I was only acting in self-defence," said Matsane.
Matsane is expected to appear in the Mapulaneng magistrates' court on June 18.
