Veteran athlete Willie Mtolo, pictured, has had his confidence boosted ahead of the Comrades Marathon when he was honoured by Ukhozi FM in Durban on Tuesday night.

Ukhozi FM, the biggest radio station in the country, held the Amaqhawe Okhozi Achiever Awards to honour members of the community for improving the lives of less-fortunate citizens.

Mtolo, 43, was awarded the KE Masinga Lifetime Achiever's Award for his contribution to sport.

He has never won the Comrades, but Mtolo has always done well and is expected to place well again on Sunday. He won the award for running a club that helps young athletes with training and materials.

"I never thought what I was doing was being recognised. To me it was just about doing something that I love," he said.
