Aim of strike is to weaken state

The blockading of hospitals and other health institutions and the closing down of schools does not do Cosatu any good.

The blockading of hospitals and other health institutions and the closing down of schools does not do Cosatu any good.

Cosatu's credibility is eroded because no rational and moral organisation can allow patients to die because essential service workers are prevented from working. Worse, Zwelinzima Vavi made another irresponsible statement - that a prolonged strike can lead to violence if workers see others going to work. Already in uMlazi, trains and buses are being stoned, which is indicative of things to come.

Vavi, as a leader of Cosatu, must condemn the violence instead of condoning it.

We all support striking workers, but they must not threaten to close our hospitals and schools. We must also condemn the wanton destruction of property.

If Cosatu settles for 7,25percent, it will be difficult for Vavi to justify his massive anti-government propaganda.

Cosatu leaders must explain to workers how wages and benefits are determined, rather than demanding 10percent. There is more to the strike than the Cosatu leadership is telling us - anarchy is disguised in working class ideology and strikes.

The aim is to weaken the government and impose the so-called working class government led by Jacob Zuma.
