'Supervise kids during strike'

Police in KwaZulu-Natal have warned parents to supervise their children who are not attending school because of the national strike.

This after Lindokuhle Xulu, 13, from Mtubatuba fell into the Umfolozi River and drowned while fishing with his friends.

His friends attempted to save Xulu, but they could not. They then ran home and reported the incident to the elders in the community.

Police spokesman Jabulani Mdletshe said a Good Samaritan who was able to dive arrived while the search was going on and helped.

"A few minutes later he came out with the body of Lindokuhle, who was already dead," said Mdletshe.

He said that because of the continuing strike, children are not attending school and this has resulted in accidents in the area.

He appealed to parents to make arrangements to have someone look after their children while they are at work.

"To avoid incidents such as these, parents should make sure that their children do not play unattended," Mdletshe said. - Sne Masuku
