A panel discussion themed "So Where To?" is taking place at the University of Johannesburg's Soweto campus on Youth Day from 9am.

Youth Day commemorates the fateful student protests against Bantu Education that erupted into a nationwide resistance campaign.

This was after a march against the use of Afrikaans as a medium of instruction turned violent in Soweto on June 16 1976.

The discussion, which is sponsored by the SABC, the University of Johannesburg and Sowetan, is being held to revive the dignity the day deserves, organiser Joyce Dube of the SABC's corporate social investment division said this week.

"We are in the 30th anniversary of Youth Day and we need to move away from treating the day ordinarily and begin to map the way forward in a constructive manner," Dube said.

Speakers will include SABC executives Dali Mpofu and Irhon Rensburg, Nelson Mandela Children's Fund head Sibongile Mkhabela, entrepreneur Ndaba Ntsele of Pamodzi, businessman and 1970s era student activist Thandi Ndlovu and African Musicians Against HIV-Aids (Amaha) leader Doc Shebeleza, whose real name is Victor Bogopane.

Shebeleza's Amaha has lined up a mass choir featuring the Dube Youth, University of Johannesburg, SABC and Anglican Church Holy Cross Choirs, who will also perform separately, sharing the stage with gospel music star Deborah Fraser and People's Poet Mzwakhe Mbuli. Popular orator Lebo Mashile will recite poetry.

lSowetan and SABC are also strategic nation-building partners in youth and community developments such as the Community Builder of the Year Awards with Old Mutual; and the Massed Choir Festival, with the Transnet Foundation.
