The naked body of an unidentified 13-year-old girl was found on the banks of the Ncandu River in Newcastle, northern KwaZulu-Natal, on Monday.

Police said yesterday the girl appeared to have been repeatedly raped before being stabbed several times in the neck.

Her naked body was discovered by local residents passing by the river. Crowds watched as police recovered the body.

A shocked bystander in the crowd said: "The killer is so evil. Her parents are probably waiting for their little girl to come back home.

"The worst thing is no one knows who this girl is."

Police spokesman Captain Shooz Magudulela said: "The victim's clothes - a red tracksuit, cream trousers, black gloves and school shoes had all been taken off, and she was raped before being murdered.

"It appears she was walking home from school when she was attacked.

"There was no form of identification on the body. We appeal to anyone who might know the girl or recognise her clothes, or who is missing a loved one to come forward," Magudulela said.

Anyone with information should contact their nearest police station.
