"Gone are the days when women only had hands to remove potatoes from the soil, today women can also remove gold from the soil," were the powerful words of the chief executive of the National African Women's Alliance Investment, Noluthando Langeni, at the last Sowetan Womens' Club function.
Langeni, one of the few black women in the top tier of the mining industry, was invited as the guest speaker at the club's function at the Elangeni Hotel in Durban two weeks ago to motivate women in business.
Langeni urged the more than 100 businesswomen in her audience to take advantage of the opportunities that had emerged with the onset of democracy.
Langeni said: "The long-term plan by the mining industry is that by 2009, 15percent of people in the mining industry should be women and by 2014 black women should make up 10percent of the industry.
"We as women should take advantage of these opportunities. We are no longer denied getting into such careers," she said.
Lorraine Mofokeng, Sowetan's marketing manager, thanked guests for using the club as a platform to empower themselves in business.
"The club started as the vision of the Sowetan and today it has grown from strength to strength and we are very proud that women in the club have achieved so much," she said.
Mofokeng congratulated the club's other sponsors, Old Mutual, Speeko rice, Mageu Number One, Sheet Street and Aranda for believing in the Sowetan's dream.
Ukhozi FM DJ Thokozani MaMkhize-Ndlovu was the MC for the evening which ended with guests being treated to the smooth sounds of the Three Divas and the showcasing of some of the city's young fashion gurus.
