The search is on for the future stars of maskandi and gospel music.

Nedbank has engaged giants of gospel and maskandi, Vuyo Mokoena, Lusanda and Phuz'ekhemisi Mnyandu, in a joint search for the country's next superstars.

The initiative substantiates the growing support for South African art and culture through Nedbank's arts affinity programme.

The talent search is expected to attract hundreds of entrants across the country from which the nine finalists will be chosen. The challenge culminates in an overall winner who will get a recording contract with Gallo as well as a brand new Toyota Corolla.

Mohamed Saloojee, head of Nedbank marketing, said the bank was delighted to play a role in the promotion of South African music. Saloojee said the initiative aimed to unearth latent music talent in the country.

"We are particularly excited to have the support and guidance of the giants in the music industry," he said.

These genres have a significant and growing presence with masterful musicians emerging to reveal the vibrant spirit of South Africa.

The three music ambassadors with the bank launched the talent search in Gauteng last week.

"We're heading to KwaZulu- Natal on Thursday," Saloojee said.

"More launches and auditions will take place in the other provinces," he said.

Phuz'ekhemisi applauded the initiative.

"This is great move by the bank.

"It will contribute immensely to the growth and upliftment of the music genres," Phuz'ekhemisi said.

He said maskandi as indigenous music has been overlooked for years.

"This music never found support, but that will be history.

"The initiative will revive and strengthen the culture of traditional music and attract the youth to showcase their talent," he said.
