Mpumalanga will be ready to deal with any emergency during the 2010 Soccer World Cup with plans to buy more than 80 new ambulances before the tournament.
This was announced by health and social services MEC William Lubisi during his budget speech in Nelspruit on Friday.
Lubisi said his department would be ready to welcome the world by 2010, adding that R150million of a total budget of R3billion would go towards emergency medical services and other resources.
Lubisi said in a bid to improve services in preparation for 2010, they would introduce new emergency services, improve response times and buy an additional 83 new ambulances and response vehicles this financial year.
"We plan to lease an air ambulance service to further improve response times in the province," said Lubisi.
"We have also set aside R3million to initiate the development of a disaster management centre for the province," he said.
Lubisi said his department was committed, not only to providing services, but to do so with utmost respect for human dignity, and in a manner that restores faith in government services.
He said his department would implement enhanced service standards in October that would "commit all health workers to adhere to defined minimum standards in the service to the people".
The MEC said his department and other stakeholders in the province would undertake a study of the Chris Hani-Baragwanath improvement project.
The project is a partnership to bring together all stakeholders to collectively improve the working environment, and thus improve service delivery in hospitals.
"Ahead of the 2010 World Cup, we have opened seven additional emergency service stations in Waterval Boven, Matsulu, Malelane, Hendrina, Kriel, Lothair and Matibidi," Lubisi said.
