Bafana Bafana star Sibusiso Zuma is in "hot water" with two charges of pointing a firearm and discharging a firearm in public laid against him in Kokstad .

But Zuma, who is making his name at overseas football team Arminia Bielefeld, has opened two counter charges of common assault and defamation of character against the complainant.

Kokstad police spokesman Director Thulani Phahla said the incident happened at a party held at a bed and breakfast on Friday night, which Zuma attended.

It is alleged that a group of friends accompanying Zuma from Durban exchanged harsh words with a group of Kokstad party revellers.

"That is when the quarrel broke out and shots were allegedly fired by Zuma" Phahla said.

He said that at this stage they did not want to get into details of the matter as the Kokstad police are still investigating. He could not say when Zuma will appear in court.

"Both parties have opened cases against each other and it will be sent to the prosecutor to decide," Phahla said.

He confirmed that the gun belongs to Zuma and is legal.

When Sowetan spoke to the first complainant, Sicelo Mphetshwa, he said Zuma's friends started the incident by chasing them away from the party.

"They claimed that we were not invited and that they don't mix with farm boys from Kokstad," Mphetshwa said.

He said they refused to leave and asked what the problem was because they were excited to see Zuma who is their favourite and a role model.

Mphetshwa said Zuma then accosted them, telling them to leave.

"He went inside the house and came back with a gun in his hand, which he pointed at us and then fired three times," Mphetshwa said.

He said that people at the party dispersed but no one was injured. Efforts to contact Zuma were unsuccessful as his cellphone was continuously on voice mail.

Rhee, as Zuma is affectionately known in football circles, scored two brilliant goals last week when Bafana Bafana crushed Chad 4-0 in Durban.
