Kiplagat wins race

NEW YORK - Lornah Kiplagat of the Netherlands won the New York Mini 10K in Central Park for a fourth time on Saturday.

NEW YORK - Lornah Kiplagat of the Netherlands won the New York Mini 10K in Central Park for a fourth time on Saturday.

Kiplagat, the two-time defending champion, finished the 36th yearly women's road race in 32 minutes, 10 seconds. Kim Smith of New Zealand was second in 32:18, three seconds faster than Mara Yamauchi of Great Britain and Benita Johnson of Australia.

Jelena Prokopcuka of Latvia, a two-time New York City marathon winner, was fifth in 32:26.

"I really got off fast because I wanted a record time," said Kiplagat of the 30:29 record set by Asmae Leghzaoui of Morocco in 2002.

"There was no pressure from the field, so I slowed down and forgot about the record."

Kiplagat's win moved her within one win of Grete Waitz of Norway and Tegla Loroupe of Kenya, who each have five titles. Ann Alyanak of Bellbrook, Ohio, was 20th in 34:49, the only American finisher in the top 25. - Sapa-AP
