MONTREAL - UK rookie Lewis Hamilton won his first Formula One in a McLaren Mercedes-Benz at the Canadian Grand Prix yesterday.

A conscious Robert Kubica, 22, of Poland, the first Pole to race in Formula One, was taken to hospital by helicopter following his spectacular crash at about 300kmh.

A spokesman for motorsport's world governing body FIA said: "He is in a stable condition. He will be leaving the circuit medical centre for more tests in hospital. He has pain in a leg or ankle."

His manager said he was talking, much to the relief of a huge crowd at the Circuit Gilles Villeneuve where they witnessed a dramatic incident-filled race. - Sapa-AFP
