A police sergeant, Sydney Shange, 42, who was stationed at Dannhauser police station, shot and killed himself at his home on Tuesday night.

"He shot himself once in the mouth with his service pistol," said police spokesman Superintendent Gert Pieterse.

Pieterse said the incident happened at Mdakane, in northern KwaZulu-Natal. He said Shange was with his girlfriend when he shot himself.

Police officers at Dannhauser were yesterday still shocked about the incident.
