It was a day of mixed emotions when the Eric Molobi Scholarship Programme was launched on Tuesday night at The Venue in Melrose Arch, Johannesburg.

The day was Molobi's birthday and also a day after the anniversary of his death.

Molobi was described as a man who truly loved education, who would have done everything to see that people acquired skills.

Speakers said his humble beginnings made him a "true son of the soil" who loved progress. Molobi, who died of cancer last June, was posthumously conferred with an honorary doctorate by the University of Johannesburg in May.

Phathutshedzo Munyai of Venda, one of the proud recipients of the scholarship, will begin his BCom Accounting degree next year at Tshwane University of Technology.
