Sowetan excels in nurturing young people through several nation-building partnerships, and these include:
l Shona Khona, an education- through- sport initiative;
l Young Communicators Awards, a public-speaking competition;
l The national schools essay competition on albinism, which seeks to help quash soul-destroying myths, rumours and superstitions about albinism;
l Community Builder of the Year Awards, which encourage selflessness among young and old South Africans; and
l The Enoch Kegakilwe Charity Soccer Challenge, which supports youth-oriented sports development in impoverished areas.
This year's beneficiaries are from Diepsloot, north of Johannesburg.
For Sowetan, all these partnerships form a part of the Aggrey Klaaste Nation Building Foundation's portfolio of youth and community development projects and programmes.
The soccer challenge has been named in honour of Enoch Kegakilwe, the DBSA soccer clubs' inspirational leader, who died in 2005.
Its sponsors and organising partners are the Development Bank of Southern Africa, Sowetan, the City of Johannesburg and the Diepsloot Sports Forum.
Up to 70 men and women corporate soccer league teams will tussle for a total of R30000 in the Enoch Kegakilwe Charity Soccer Challenge that will be held at the John Orr Technikon Soccer Grounds in Milpark, Johannesburg, on Sunday from 9am.
Nominees for the youth, adult, senior, group and company categories of the Community Builder of the Year Awards are selected by Sowetan readers, the SABC's listeners and viewers, Old Mutual's clients and all other South Africans.
The winners of the Gauteng leg of the awards will be announced at Ubuntu Kraal in Orlando West, Soweto, tonight at 7pm. The other provincial chapters of the Community Builder of the Year Awards will be held on June 15 in KwaZulu-Natal, June 22 in Limpopo, June 29 in Eastern Cape, July 6 in Mpumalanga, July 13 in Free State, July 20 in Western Cape, July 27 in Northern Cape and on August 3 in North West.
The national finals of the Anglo American and Sowetan-sponsored Young Communicators Awards will take place in the Anglo American Auditorium in Johannesburg tomorrow from 9am.
Both the national and provincial education departments are pivotal partners of the awards.
The finalists are Eastern Cape's Thembi Losi, Limpopo's Kgethego Chiloane, KwaZulu-Natal's Sanda Luthuli, Free State's Star Khulu, Western Cape's Namhla Yaziyo, Northern Cape's Marine Opperman, North West's Nokwanda Sithole, Gauteng's Tumelo Sibanda and Mpumalanga's Sibusiso Khoza.
The second soccer coaching and life-skills training camp of the Metcash and Reckitt Benckiser-sponsored Shona Khona education-through-sport initiative will be held at the Safa-Transnet Soccer School of Excellence at Elandsfontein in Ekurhuleni on Sunday from 9am.

From this camp, six lucky future soccer stars will be selected to join the other six who were selected at the December camp last year, and the 12 aspirants will visit the Sao Paulo Soccer Academy in Brazil in July.
