Redhill School in Johannesburg celebrated its centenary with a Walk of the Century.
People walked from Redhill's former schools in Yeoville and Parkview to its current one in Morningside, Sandton.
Close to 1500 people took part in the event.
A few people ran from Hendon Street in Yeoville, the school's original home known as St Winifred's at its inception in 1907. More than 600 walkers assembled at the crack of dawn in Parkview, the school's second home.
Walkers and runners made their way through Craighall, Sandhurst and Parkmore, where they joined other participants to complete the final leg of the walk at the school's Outspan Sport's Centre.
The Morningside Country Club Road Runners volunteered their expertise as logistical and technical coordinators. They also helped the Metro police by guiding and keeping walkers safe on the roads.
The weather on the morning of May 13 was absolutely glorious and this ensured a great start to the historic walk. As it was also Mother's Day, large numbers of families took advantage of both celebrations.
The walk ended with a piper welcoming the walkers and the school's youngest pupils cheering them at the Outspan Sports Centre.
All the walkers had assembled at the soccer field about two-and-a-half hours after the 7am start.
Medals and awards were presented and the event ended with four skydivers landing on the field as part of a fundraising effort.
The mood was energising, festive and inspiring. It was a wonderful way to celebrate the Redhill family, and everything that the school stands for in its 100th year.
