Popular Durban radio station Igagasi FM is under investigation by the Broadcasting Complaints Commission of South Africa (BCCSA) after it had received complaints from the public.
The station has been accused of "tarnishing the image of people" during its morning show, Alex and the Crew. One of the complainants, local journalist Nkosinathi Mshengu, wrote to the BCCSA accusing Igagasi of breaching the broadcasting code of conduct.
Mshengu had a heated argument during the Kiss and Make Up live show about music CDs in possession of the station's news reader, Thozama Mbili.
Mbili accused Mshengu of refusing to return music CDs that belonged to her. At the time, the two were working for Durban Youth Radio.
Mbili claimed that she produced one of Mshengu's shows using her own CDs but he didn't return them to her. Mshengu accused the station for misusing its power.
He allegedly took the matter up with his legal team which wrote a letter to the radio station and the BCCSA asking for tapes of the show.
Mshengu is the second person to take legal action against the Kagiso Media-owned station .
Mshengu declined to comment saying "the matter is sub judice".
Last month, Durban traditional healer, Keletso Pekile, wrote to the BCCSA asking them to investigate the station for its lack of accountability and for using the air waves to destroy people's reputations. And a few months ago, political parties, including the IFP, complained that the station didn't exert proper control over the morning show.
Velaphi Ndlovu, IFP deputy secretary, complained that the station was allowing its listeners to insult leaders on air.
Shouneez Martin, the BCCSA's registrar, said that they had received a complaint about the broadcaster from Pekile.
"We are not in a position to comment at this stage because the matter is under investigation. We haven't listened to the broadcast tapes," she said.
Alex Mthiyane, spokesman for Igagasi, said the station had not yet received any complaints from the BCCSA or Mshengu's lawyer.
"We will respond once we have received them," he said.
