Fashion flyers or flops?

We love our South African men, but there is just one distinguishing element that most seem to flunk dismally: the wardrobe. Many seem to show scant regard for the contention that style maketh the man.

We love our South African men, but there is just one distinguishing element that most seem to flunk dismally: the wardrobe. Many seem to show scant regard for the contention that style maketh the man.

Better still, it is a truism that money can't buy style. It is something one is born with or something learnt over time. And, true, subtle is class.

nWith looks most women would die for, billionaire Patrice Motsepe ironically takes the dubious honour of being the worst-dressed celeb ever. He's arguably the most cultured dude, but still there's something he just can't get right - dress sense. AIl the money in the world can't buy a tad of taste for him. That is, if his colourful jackets and ties are anything to go by. A stylist could come to his rescue if he needed one.

nFor all his erstwhile football wizardry, Doctor Khumalo has not proved to be equally adept in the wardrobe stakes. He is another celeb who needs clothing counselling, if he could make the time for it. This is notwithstanding the Status advert, which - at best - has been flattering. That cap and leather jackets are so yesterday.

nAnother fashion pariah is without doubt Dali Tambo. Contrary to his regal demeanour, his dress sense betrays it all. An ancient magician could not have found a better competitor. A new Dali, devoid of all the drapes that could pass off as curtains, is awaited in the cocktail circuit.

nAlso in the back end of the queue is Blondie Makhene. We acknowledge the struggle sentiments that imbue his wardrobe choice but he has to move on, as did many of his peers, who have since changed their image. His military gear might have been relevant in the struggle days but, post-1994, it should be destined for the Apartheid Museum, alongside other struggle memorabilia!
