Three students mistaken for car hijackers have had their lives turned upside down after they were sodomised while in custody.

The youths were arrested following a high-speed chase between police and suspected car hijackers who abandoned the stolen car in Tembisa on May 7.

The criminals ran away on foot and it is alleged that police found three young men sitting on the stairs andbegan assaulting them. The men were arrested and charged in Pretoria.

They appeared in court on May 16 where the case was postponed. On May 24 the court found their fingerprints did not match those on the stolen vehicle.

The men, aged 24, 23 and 21, claim that while doing "time" from May 16 at Pretoria Central Prison, they were sodomised and assaulted by inmates.

On Friday charges of assault were laid against the police.

One parent, who did not want to be named, said: " My son is a good child who respects the law."

Correctional Services officials were not available for comment yesterday.
