I am a first-year student nurse at one of the most prestigious hospitals this side of the equator. My colleagues and I are paid by the Gauteng health department to alleviate staff shortages in the health sector, particularly in professional nursing.

I am a first-year student nurse at one of the most prestigious hospitals this side of the equator. My colleagues and I are paid by the Gauteng health department to alleviate staff shortages in the health sector, particularly in professional nursing.

My most primary function as a nursing professional is to care for the sick and basically to alleviate pain and suffering by ensuring that all the basic needs of patients are met.

I have a six-year contract with the department. Four years are for academic or training purposes and two years for repaying the stipend which is a level-three public servants wage or salary.

I am a 24-year-old single male and still live with my parents.

We all want a good lifestyle and the 12percent wage demand is very reasonable. The government must stop being stubborn and give us what we deserve. If not, it will lose a competent and highly skilled professional like myself to the private sector or even another country.

I would like to challenge the government to do the work of the strikers, at their pay, for one month. Get in our shoes and get your hands dirty and then come back and negotiate. I guarantee you that the loss of your freebies and luxurious lifestyle will change your stance very quickly.
