The notion of "the lost generation", ascribed to the unemployed youth of the 1980s who lacked direction and wallowed in self-destructive activities, still haunts our society today.

The notion of "the lost generation", ascribed to the unemployed youth of the 1980s who lacked direction and wallowed in self-destructive activities, still haunts our society today.

Joblessness remains the biggest obstacle for the youth in our country - to reintegrate into the mainstream of society and participate in skills training programmes to improve their lot.

But all is not be lost if more universities emulate the example of Johannesburg University's Soweto Vista Campus, which canvasses big business to sponsor its entrepreneurial development programme for unemployed youth.

It is imperative that tertiary institutions establish a philanthropic link with their neighbouring communities rather than maintain elitist aloofness.
