A Mpumalanga man allegedly committed suicide after his wife refused to have sex with him for weeks.

Charles Nkuna, 37, of Block C near Komatipoort on Friday reportedly hanged himself with a piece of rope in the kitchen after his wife banned him from having sex with her.

His wife had apparently refused to have sex with Nkuna for weeks after accusing him of cheating on her. She feared he he would infect her with an unspecified disease.

Police spokesman Mzwandile Nyambi said the man even asked the local headman to intervene and convince his wife to lift the ban, but she still refused.

"It seems it has been some time since the couple had sex and the man could not take it any longer and so he decided to take his life," said Nyambi yesterday.

When Nkuna left the bedroom after a quarrel with his wife, she thought he had gone to sleep in another room.

But when she went to the kitchen in the morning, she found him lying on the floor. At first she thought he was asleep.

It was only after she noticed the rope around his neck that she realised he was dead.

Police said the rope apparently tore after Nkuna hanged himself, forcing him to fall.

Police have opened an inquest to allow for further investigations.
