Employees at Rob Ferreira Hospital in Mpumalanga defied the Health Department warning that they would be fired if they failed to report for work yesterday.

Sowetan could find no nurses at the hospital yesterday morning.

This led to patients being left unattended.

The nurses have joined the continuing public sector strike. A few officials, mainly senior staffers, were present.

The hospital's acting chief executive, who identified herself only as Doctor Muhangi, refused to comment. - Riot Hlatshwayo
