A revelation that 31 percent of children have died during their first 24 hours at South African hospitals is shocking.

Dr Mphele Mulaudzi, a member of the Child Problem Identification Programme, told the Human Rights Commission last week that 63 percent of child deaths in hospitals could have been be avoided.

These children died because of lack of proper equipment or neglect by healthcare practitioners.

This paints a gloomy picture on the future of children in this country. The ministry of health must act hastily to prevent further deaths of children at these institutions.

Enough money has to be immediately allocated to address this crisis.

Children are assets. They are the future of this country, and all efforts should be made to save their lives.
