The fifth edition of the Peter Mokaba Memorial Golf Tournament will take centre stage in Polokwane on June 16.

This year's competition will be played for the first time without supporting events that were normally staged a day before and after the main tournament.

The tournament is staged in remembrance of the late ANC leader Peter Mokaba.

Limpopo Eagles Golf Association (Lega), the provincial controlling body under whose auspices the tournament is staged, decided at its executive meeting in Mankweng last weekend to separate the junior golf championship and the inter-club tournament from the main spectacle.

The other two events, which are held under the umbrella of the main event, will now be staged on the third weekend of September.

"We decided to spread the two tournaments because we believe this will help us to have more golfers taking part in the Peter Mokaba programme," explained Pat "Fingers" Moyaha, Lega's publicist.

"I think people will not easily forget about the Peter Mokaba golf events if we spread the tournaments rather than staging them in one weekend.

"After the main event on June 16 people will still be looking forward to the September tournaments. Staging the youth competition in September will also help us to lure more pupils to the event because it will be school holidays.

"We have been struggling to attract more youngsters to this tourney because of cold weather conditions in June."

About 170 golfers from across the country are expected to compete in the main event. They include politicians, business people and individual golfers.

Lega's honourary president Andrew Mlangeni is expected to be among high profile politicians competing in this keenly-awaited tournament.

Some football administrators with a passion for golf are also expected to take part and golf fanatic and Premier Soccer League's general manager football, Andrew "Druza" Dipela, is the first soccer administrator to confirm his availability for the event.

The tournament has also been used by the ambitious Lega to develop golf in the programme and Moyaha is confident of the new format: "Our development programme will benefit a great deal".
