As the political face of an organisation and the country, a leader must be exemplary.

It would be a mistake for the ANC to lower its standards of choosing a leader just 13 years into democracy. A huge challenge facing the country and the ANC is moral degeneration, which is characterised by crime, corruption, nepotism and careerism.

The demon, "get rich, get rich at all cost" is beginning to eat away at the moral fibre of our society and pitting ANC cadres against one another in a quest for power.

Schabir Shaik's trial is a good example. The power struggles are not ideological, but about access to state power and social and economic mobility.

The ANC and the country needs a leader with high morals. Corrupt leaders cannot lead moral regeneration programmes.

It will be suicidal for the ANC to elect a leader based on populism and tribalism.

Mbeki has raised the ANC and the country to new heights. He is an intellectual giant and a great strategist who takes a high ideological stand. He is an internationalist who understands "real politics" of the West and has been instrumental in shaping African governance.

Mbeki is a pragmatist, a workaholic and a policy manager who seeks practical rather than theoretical solutions.

Electing leaders who love the limelight is dangerous. Populists are cheerleaders who have a capacity to mismanage. They can never be leaders of substance.

Being on the left does not mean one has to be a SACP member. The current left is no longer immune to corruption.
