CEO of Boxing South Africa, Bongani Khumalo, assumed his duties last Friday.
He was supposed to have done so on March 1 but poor health prevented him from taking the hot seat which had been vacant since the departure of Thabo Moseki two years ago.
Khumalo, who is wheelchair-bound, was welcomed by a handful of licensees at the Nasrec auditorium on Friday. Wearing his disarming smile, Mntungwa, which is his clan name, promised to fight alongside the licensees and other stakeholders in their quest to take boxing to its rightful spot.
Khumalo did not make many promises, but he made it clear that he needed to streamline the staff and work hard on a strategic plan to reclaim the sponsorship BSA lost.
"I have been in management in various positions for many years. I am also a sporting person. Boxing has been my second love. It is a privilege for me to be appointed in this position. I hope we can join hands and improve from strength to strength.
"BSA is well established so far. It is going to a consolidation stage," he said.
"Like any other business we need to move to a qualitative stage and that is where I will feature to try and see how best we can improve on what has been happening and introduce other things.
"It is a challenge that administration of finances also needs attention. We need a robust approach to popularise the sport."
