LUSAKA - A stampede in Zambia left 12 soccer fans dead and many others injured after a match between the home team and Congo Brazzaville at the weekend, police said yesterday.

Copperbelt police chief Antonnell Mutentwa said 46 soccer fans were injured and admitted to Konkola Mine Hospital in Chililabombwe, a copper mining town bordering the DRC, 450km north of the capital Lusaka.

Mutentwa said fans were trampled underfoot by fellow supporters as they rushed to leave the stadium after Zambia beat Congo Brazzaville 3-0 in an African Cup qualifier.

Mutentwa said the cause of the stampede was unclear, though one witness said it had been caused by people rushing to get aboard free transport. -Reuters
