The Limpopo government yesterday lauded Anglo Platinum for investing R280million in a mining training school in the province.

The mining giant last week announced that the school will be built at its Twickenham Mine and will benefit about 2000 trainees a year.

Construction is expected to start this month and the first batch of trainees is expected to begin studying next year.

The project will provide 100 new permanent jobs at the mine and an additional 100 jobs during the construction of the school.

Limpopo premier Sello Moloto said: "We are delighted by the announcement of the project. The focus will be on practical underground training, infrastructure- development skills, supervision and maintenance.

"Trainees will also be equipped with conventional and mechanised skills to match the mining techniques employed by mines in the province."

Moloto said the need to create jobs and alleviate poverty in the province could not be overemphasised.

He said that the growth of platinum mining in the province meant that the mines needed more skilled people to run them efficiently.

This latest investment by Anglo Platinum came about after negotiations between the Limpopo government and private companies.

The government has been trying to convince business, and the mining houses in particular, that they should invest in educational institutions at which mining courses are offered.

Moloto said cooperation with colleges and universities would lead to more people gaining the essential skills required for obtaining sustainable employment and for alleviating poverty.
