Her heart condition did not deter her from helping her church or her community.
In fact, most people who spent time with retired primary school teacher Virginia Meja Daya did not know that she was a very sick woman.
She underwent major heart surgery a few years ago, shortly after she retired in 1998.
"Sis Meja", as she was popularly known in Atteridgeville, near Pretoria, passed away suddenly last Saturday.
Active as usual, Daya, 61, woke up at about 6am at her home in 14 Ramokgopa Street and prepared to attend a tombstone unveiling ceremony at a neighbour's house where she was asked to attend to visitors.
Daya collapsed on her way to the bathroom.
A suspected heart attack ended the life of a dedicated mother, a community worker and a committed Christian.
Daya was the daughter of Joseph and Poppy Madisha. She was married to Bunny Daya, who passed away about 10 years ago.
Daya started teaching at JJ De Jongh Primary School in Atteridgeville in 1968.
She later left the school to teach at another local school, St Annes Primary School, until 1998 when she retired.
Daya will be buried at the Old Atteridgeville Cemetery today.
The funeral service will be held at the Evangelical Luthern Church on the corner of Tlale and Sekhukhune streets in Atteridgeville from 7am to 9am.
Daya is survived by her three children, Kgothatso, Lloyd and Poppy.
