Stock theft in the former Transkei is increasing, the Eastern Cape Safety and Liaison Department said yesterday.

In an attempt to eradicate the problem, MEC Thobile Mhlahlo, will host an anti-stock theft imbizo in Tsolo at the Mdibanisweni Community Hall tomorrow at 9am.

Department spokesman Ncedo Kumbaca said stock theft remained a serious problem in the area.

"Unfortunately, current crime trends indicate an unprecedented rise in stock theft.

"Statistics showed Tsolo was rated worst and Qumbu second worst areas nationally," he said.

The areas are also notorious for faction fights resulting from stock theft incidents.

Kumbaca said there had been 130 reported cases of stock theft since February.

This included 49 head of cattle, 205 sheep, 110 goats and four horses.

Fourteen people had been arrested, said Kumbaca.
