The elusive auditor-general's report that warned transport department officials not to implement the bug-plagued eNatis vehicle registration system has come back to haunt Transport Minister Jeff Radebe.
Yesterday, the DA asked parliament's transport portfolio committee to call on Radebe to release the report.
And also yesterday the department of transport made an urgent application to the Pretoria high court for an interdict that would stop Beeld newspaper from publishing information from the report.
"This conduct by the department flies in the face of the principles of transparency and accountability, and undermines the auditor-general's constitutional requirement to report on and audit state departments," said the DA's Stuart Farrow.
The South African National Editor's Forum (Sanef) has accused the department of acting unconstitutionally.
"This is yet another example of institutions attempting to use court process to censor newspapers from publishing information that is in the public interest," said Sanef chairman Ferial Haffajee
The existence of the auditor-general's report was revealed by Beeld following the public outcry about the litany of e-Natis glitches.
Radebe's at that time denied any knowledge of the report. He subsequently acknowledged its existence and said he would comment after he had looked at it.
eNatis is said to have cost taxpayers R408million.
