The IFP and two other opposition parties in the Newcastle municipality in northern KwaZulu-Natal have defended their move to join forces to oust the ANC.

Last week the IFP joined the National Democratic Convention (Nadeco) and the DA and voted out ANC mayor Phumzile Mbatha-Cele and her deputy Mathew Masina.

The mayoral position went to IFP leader Mercy Dube and the DA's Jacobus Vorster is her deputy.

The ANC has accused the IFP of ignoring local government rules. Mbuso Kubheka, ANC deputy provincial secretary, said the process was unprocedural and the matter would be reported to local government MEC Mike Mabuyakhulu.

Blessed Gwala, IFP deputy provincial chairman, said the ANC was welcome to take the matter to the MEC.

"We did not flout any laws. This was in response to the public outcry against corruption in council," said Gwala.
