Five people, including two pastors from independent churches, were killed instantly when their cars smashed head-on in North West at the weekend.
The pastors in a Toyota and eight youngsters packed in a BMW slammed into each other on Sunday morning on the Mafikeng-Lichtenburg road before dawn.
Roads and Transport Department spokesman Matshube Mfoloe identified the pastors as Fani Ntsabane of the Resurrection Christ Church and Meshack Selane of the Apostolic Faith Mission.
Witnesses said two bodies in the BMW were burnt beyond recognition after the car burst into flames on impact. The youngsters were travelling from Verdwaal village between Mareetsane and Itsoseng.
The ages of the victims and survivors in the BMW ranged from 17 to 20.
Five youths and the driver of the BMW were flung several metres from the scene of the accident. The injured, three women and two men, were taken to Itsoseng and Bophelong hospitals. Their conditions were described as critical.
The pastors were trapped in a brand new Yaris and their bodies had to be removed from the wreckage using the jaws of life.
North West transport MEC Jerry Thibedi appealed to all road users, especially motorists, to be extra careful when driving, especially at dusk and dawn.
"My sincere condolences to the families and relatives who lost loved ones in this horrific accident. I also wish those injured a speedy recovery," said Thibedi.
