A top Johannesburg Metro cop appeared in the Johannesburg magistrates' court yesterday on a charge of rape.
Chief Superintendent of internal affairs, Amon Kganyago, handed himself over to police yesterday after a junior officer laid a rape charge against him.
It is alleged that Kganyago, 46, a married man, forced himself on the woman at her apartment in Brixton. The two are alleged to have been romantically involved.
Metro police spokesman Edna Mmamonyane confirmed Kganyago's court appearance.
A colleague, who spoke on condition of anonymity, said it was widely known in the department that the two were having an affair.
It is alleged that Kganyago went to the woman's apartment to collect a departmental video camera.
Another colleague told Sowetan that Kganyago asked for sexual favours when he discovered that she had lost the camera.
"When he got there the camera was not there. She told him she had lost it.
"Kganyago apparently told her that he would hate to testify against her, but they could make a plan," said the colleague, who also spoke on condition of anonymity.
The woman apparently declined the offer and that was when Kganyago allegedly forced himself on her.
A female Metro police officer, said: "I am angry and disgusted. He is the one who has to enforce discipline in the department."
Kganyago was released on R10000 bail and was warned not to leave Gauteng without permission. The case was postponed to June 26.
