Consulting witchdoctors and ababholofidi (prophets) has and will always be part of us.

Consulting witchdoctors and ababholofidi (prophets) has and will always be part of us.

They give us imithi (herbs) and iziwasho (holy water) which sometimes does the trick.

But these beliefs will count for zero if we fold our arms and expect imithi and iziwasho to perform our duties in all our spheres of life.

I am bringing this up simply because I want to talk about a soccer player by the name of Godfrey Sapula.

Look, I am not implying that the "Godfather" from Mamelodi Sundowns visits the above-mentioned.

The point that I am driving home here is that nothing beats hard work and determination. Sapula, at thirty-something, outplayed all his juniors and his peers throughout the Castle Premiership 2006-07 season and in the end walked away with two prestigious awards - Players' Player and the most sought-after Player of the Season trophies.

These are fruits of commitment. Sapula had the will to to do very well in the field of play. For me Sapula, 34, and Shoes Moshoeu, 42, have proved beyond reasonable doubt that age is just a number.

I am here merely trying to encourage each and every one - young and old - to dedicate themselves to what they do and the fruits will be as sweet as honey.

To other soccer players, boxers and all other sports people - work hard, live clean and jigsaw puzzles will all fall into space.

Well done, Sapula. May your legs carry you for as long you still have the will and energy in your tank to run around the pitch.

To Sundowns' coach Gordon Igesund and the rest of the club - well done, boys - winning the PSL season goes to show the kind of commitment that I am talking about.

I take my leave.
