Those who had written off Phumlani Mkhize, former Orlando Pirates and Kaizer Chiefs' lethal striker, would have been shocked to see the man score three goals this past week at the Vodacom playoffs.
Mkhize, making his appearance in the colours of Vodacom side Abaqulusi of Ladysmith, hopes he can relaunch his career in the elite league. He joined Abaqulusi six months ago, playing mostly with players who grew up admiring him. Mkhize previously played for African Wanderers, nicknamed Abaqulusi, before moving to Bucs with Sibusi Zuma.
Abaqulusi's plan was to get promoted to the First Division League, however, those plans faded when they lost a crucial game against Hanover Park - a team that eventually qualified for the final on Wednesday.
That game was so tense that it was stopped for more than 40 minutes, with referees claiming intimidation from a section of the crowd and police called to restore order. For Mkhize it's now back to the drawing board.
"To be honest with you, it is a disgrace for PSL referees to be so incompetent. They are killing our game and discouraging the youngsters. When are they going to learn? If it were not for them, we would be talking something different now," Mkhize fumed.
It is back to the promotional league now for Abaqulusi, but Mkhize indicated that some teams have approached him to join them, he said.
