The president of the International Cricket Council (ICC), Percy Sonn, pictured, died yesterday of complications after colon surgery. He was 57.

Sonn, who became president of world cricket's governing body last year, had been in a critical condition at a Cape Town hospital since May 21.

The ICC paid tribute to Sonn on its website, describing him as instrumental in unifying South African cricket after years of racial segregation and helping the country return to the international fold.

"As a cricket administrator and a man, Sonn was a giant," said his predecessor, Ehsan Mani.

"His passing will leave cricket much poorer."
