It is the responsibility of the church to look after the spiritual and social needs of its community.

This was the message from Francis Ruele, president of the Richard Allen Young Adult Council, which falls under the African Methodist Episcopal Church in Springs, Ekurhuleni.

The council donated groceries to the Tholakele Centre of Hope in KwaThema at the weekend.

The orphanage looks after 30 orphans.

"It is the church's mission to look after communities living in poverty," said Ruele.

Ruele said God had guided members of the church to help the orphanage.

"What we did was in line with the Bible's teachings.

"We are hoping to do more in the future, and extend our reach to other organisations that need our help," said Ruele.
