What the hell were Premier Mbhazima Shilowa and MECs Paul Mashatile and Ignatius Jacobs thinking when they okayed a monorail corridor without the knowledge of central government?Surely they know such a massive capital project is a national competence and that commuter rail transport is the sole preserve of the South African Commuter Rail Corporation?Although they are well within their right to dream up such grandiose schemes, no Sam, Paul or Ignatius can just start such a service on their own.Now the three musketeers have been left with egg on their faces after Transport Minister Jeff Radebe stopped the project dead in its tracks. As for mayor Amos Masondo; how does he explain keeping the minister in the dark while engaging him on transport strategies for the city ahead of 2010? These include government's R2billion rapid bus transport system linking Soweto with Lenasia and Parktown. Now it emerges that the clandestine monorail project has all the makings of a pipe dream.Experts are especially sceptical about claims the monorail can carry 1,5million passengers daily.Shilowa, Mashatile, Jacobs and Masondo would do well not to nurse their bruised egos for too long and rather concentrate on more realistic projects.central government?
