Essential services in KwaZulu-Natal, including health, schooling and policing, will be disrupted today as thousands of members of Cosatu and of other public-service unions march in Pietermaritzburg as part of a one-day stayaway.

Union leaders will hand a memorandum to Premier Sbu Ndebele in the legislature.

The march is a forerunner of next week's planned public service strike, a result of failed wage negotiations between the government and the public-service unions. The unions are demanding a 12percent increase, but the government is offering 6percent.
