Internationally acclaimed East London boxing promoter and manager Mzimasi "Bra Mzi" Mnguni is embroiled in controversy. The auditor-general has found that he irregularly received a donation from Buffalo City Municipality.

Mnguni, mentor of many former world boxing champions in the Eastern Cape, might be forced to repay the R150 000 his boxing club, Eyethu Boxing Promotions, received from the municipality.

Mnguni, a businessman who owns several shops in Mdantsane, including the Spar supermarket, refused to confirm that the municipality had alerted him to the irregularity of the donation.

"All you journalists want is to make news; I don't want to be part of this. Is there any money stolen from the municipality? If there's a complaint it must come forward so that I can handle it," he said.

The matter was among the issues discussed at the municipality's monthly meeting earlier this month.

"A provision for payment has been made without the required authority," said the AG's report, urging that the donation be reversed in the municipality's books.

Council officials did not respond to queries left for them.
