A new blog containing tales of the alleged sexual escapades of prominent South Africans is being probed by police, Mail & Guardian Online reported yesterday.

Purported to be written by a former male prostitute, the blog is hosted on an international blogging platform and has been active since April.

It is said to contain detailed descriptions of the alleged sexual behaviour of prominent South Africans.

Among those who allegedly paid the author of the blog for sex were a politician, a rugby star, a stage performer, well-known journalists and a prominent Afrikaans minister.

One entry listed a celebrity's name followed by a notice saying information would be published "soon" or "within 72 hours", said M&G Online.

A performer mentioned in the blog said all kinds of claims and allegations had been levelled against him before, and that he preferred to ignore these.

Another person listed denied the blog's "untested claims", but said he would consider legal steps if details of the blog became publicly known.

At least one other person named has reported the blog's "slanderous comments" to police.

Inspector Jeremy Steyn at the Caledon Square police station in Cape Town told M&G Online on Wednesday that the matter was being investigated. - Sapa
