It is very disappointing that each development initiative is met with opposition from some group. Are those blocking such initiatives doing it for the good of commuters or are they only concerned with what they stand to gain?
When travelling in Europe and the US, I marvelled at its effective and efficient public transport. People leave their cars at stations and take a train to work.
South Africa can easily do this because we have more land. As a developing country,South Africa has to improve its public transport urgently. The Gautrain, monorail, buses and taxis will complement each other and most importantly, benefit commuters and the country.
The taxi industry needs to understand that competition is good for business. It is unfortunate that it resorts to gun battles whenever it faces competition. Anybody in any business knows that competition means it is time to improve services.
We have had bad service and unfair treatment from the taxi industry for too long. Hopefully, the new transport initiative will be a new beginning for commuters.
