Mpumalanga MEC for health and social services William Lubisi has appealed to people to change their sexual behaviour to reduce the escalating number of HIV-Aids infections.
Lubisi was speaking at the launch of the Aids council in the Gert Sibande district municipality in Secunda this week.
The council's mandate is to facilitate, strengthen and support HIV-Aids initiatives in the district.
"Let us all stretch our minds and think of a South Africa where its people live in harmony and free from the Aids pandemic," Lubisi said.
He said the government's new plan of action to fight the scourge of HIV-Aids as well as sexually transmitted infections from this year to 2011 would not succeed on its own.
"We can devote all the budget required for this plan, as we have committed to do, but as long as we do not see an overall change in sexual behaviour, we might not realise the results we hope for," he said.
Lubisi said to destigmatise the Aids pandemic, the national consensus that has been achieved should also be felt at taxi ranks, shopping centres and churches.
