Child- and grandparent-headed households in Gauteng recently received much-needed support from the Absa Foundation.
The foundation consolidated its relationship with the Orphans and Vulnerable Children (OVC) campaign when it entered into a partnership with two non-governmental organisations, the Johannesburg Child Welfare Society and the Starfish Great Hearts Foundation.
At a ceremony at The Elton John Masibambisane Centre in Eldorado Park earlier this year, the two Gauteng NGOs each received R110000, which will be used to support orphaned families in Gauteng during the year.
This forms part of a larger initiative that will see the Absa Foundation donating more than R1million to support 166 households throughout the country.
Steve Booysen, chief executive of Absa Bank, said: "When individuals are uplifted, we believe communities will also eventually flourish.
"This, in turn, will see our nation become stronger and that is when development becomes truly sustainable."
Two years ago the Absa Foundation decided to support child-headed households as part of its corporate social investment focus in the fight against HIV-Aids.
The foundation's aim is to create awareness about the growing number of child- headed households and to raise funds for the sustainable support of these households.
This year each of the families being supported will be registered with the Department of Social Development to enable them to receive social grants.
The Johannesburg Child Welfare Society thanked the foundation on behalf of the OVC and Masibambisane.
