The IFP has welcomed the eThekwini municipality's decision not to continue with the renaming of the Mangosuthu Highway, Mangosuthu Technikon and Princess Magogo Stadium.
The ANC-led municipality decided this week at a full council meeting, with all parties represented, that it would not go ahead with the changing of names.
Early this month the IFP organised a march against the proposed renamings. The party said changing the names would wipe out acknowledgement of the contribution made by the IFP leader, Mangosuthu Buthelezi.
Yesterday the Masakhane committee, which is responsible for coordinating name changes, said the ANC in the municipality had not proposed such name changes.
The municipal speaker James Nxumalo said it was members of the public who had suggested that the names be changed.
"As the ANC, we never said we were going to change the names of Mangosuthu Highway and Princess Magogo Stadium. But members of the public did," said Nxumalo.
Nxumalo said the meeting with the IFP and the DA had helped in making the two parties understand where the ANC stood on the issue and both parties were happy with the council's decision.
He said the extension of the deadline for suggestions for name changes to June 23 was a sign that the council wanted to give everyone a chance to make a submission.
"Some street names will be changed and some won't. We would welcome new names," he said.
Thembi Nzuza, the leader of the IFP municipal caucus, said his party was happy that the name Mangosuthu would not be dropped from the designations of the highway and the technikon.
"I think this is a step in the right direction.
"We are happy that the process is now open to the public, but we still maintain that a well-defined policy in this matter is essential," said Nzuza.
She said the IFP will meet to discuss the issue further.
